Solving the linking dilemma

Mailing lists are usually either full of dud email addresses or are full of email addresses that people never check and yet, we, as the internet marketing community either keep paying for these lists or keep flogging them to unsuspecting marketers.
One thing we know has value is linking. Both reciprocal and one way. This has never been an easy process and because of this you have your "black hatters" out there flogging things like "trackback spider" for high monthly fees and promising easy one way links. Please!! Don't waste your money. Unethical SEO practices will always get found out. Don't let that kind of mud stick to you.

I am currently testing an idea for genuine reciprocal linking that is not only fast but is valuable and strictly "white hat".
At first glance, it may look a bit like a mailing list, but it is far from it. Every url on the list is a genuine site, grouped in categories for relevance and every one is ready to link with as many compatible sites as possible.

Who is your real competition?

Doing business online is very different to main street marketing. Main street marketing makes everyone your competition. For example, if you have a fashion accessories store and you are relying on foot traffic impulse buying, even the coffee shop across the arcade can be taking your potential customer's last bit of play money. Money that you want them to spend on a new hand bag or pair of ear rings.

Your online marketing campaign can be crippled because you are employing a main street marketing mindset. Your competition is not that other website that is getting more traffic than you. More to the point, that high traffic website could actually be a potential source of business to you. The key to a lucrative online business is identifying not your competitiors but your potential partners.

Here is a scenario:
You are a shoe retailer selling a wide range of kids and sport shoes online. You have a great looking website but your stats reveal that none of your hits are coming through the search engines. You have spent a small fortune on television and newspaper ads to draw attention to your site which is accounting for most of your sites visitors. A specialty shoe retailer, selling mens dress and business shoes has been driving you mad because his site ranks in the top ten under the keyword "shoes" and he is busy processing orders every day. Hey, his site isn't even as pretty as yours! He is obviously your competition - right?

WRONG!

This high traffic site has a smaller potential market than yours, selling only higher priced shoes to a certain clientelle. You need your site to come up in the top ten on Google under "shoes" but right now, it just does not. (Of course, I can fix that for you. Excuse the plug.) What happens if someone lands on this other site to find that the shoes they want are not available through this retailer? They would log out and start looking again. Wouldn't it be better if you had a prominent link on this high ranking page which directs them to the products that best suit them? Your competiton just became your best friend. You benefited directly from someone else's sites high ranking!
In most cases, a reciprocal arrangement will mean that this will leave you with no out of pocket expense and will only serve to strengthen both businesses.
